Knowing the difference between Parfum, Toilette and Eau de Parfum also Eau Fraiche

We are all familiar with perfume. Nowadays, perfume has the highest concentration of essential oils, about 20%-30%, resulting in a Smoother fragrance that makes it a more persistent, long-lasting scent. The scent should stay on the skin for about 6 hours and fabrics can keep it for much longer possibly a day. This makes perfume the most high-priced of all the fragrance options and clearly isn’t intended for everyday use.

Eau De Parfum

Many confuse Eau De Parfum with regular perfume. However, the keyword here is “eau” (from water), which means that the essence is more diluted. The portion of oil substances in eau de parfum or perfumed water is a bit lower around 15% to 20%. These fragrances last for about 4 hours on the skin and compared to perfume, they’re a much lighter fragrance and can be used more regularly.

Eau De Toilette

Eau de toilette dates back to the 14th century and was also called “heavenly water”. Today, it’s a lighter fragrance that contains 5% to 15% pure perfume essence which is softened with alcohol. It usually lasts for about 2 to 3 hours and has a discreet scent which makes it appropriate for hot summer days. This is the most popular choice of perfumery today.

Eau Fraiche

“Eau fraiche” translates to “fresh water” and represents the lightest perfume of all — the concentration of the oil component is approximately 1% to 3%. The fragrance lasts on the skin for less than an hour, making its aromatic notes practically indistinguishable. Eau fraiche usually is lower in price and can be used at any time of the day, including when you are out for lunch a quick meeting or when you have finished working out in the gym.

Perfume Distinction

Eau de Toilette or Eau de Parfum? While Eau de Toilette contains 5-9% of perfume oil, Eau de Parfum usually contains 8-14%. Eau de Parfums therefore last longer and smell more intense.

Natural or synthetic fragrances? Perfumes with natural ingredients often smell different in batches based on the source of the ingredients, while synthetic ingredients usually have consistency in their smell and lasts longer.

Notes and different smell after application? Perfumes are often designed with top, middle and base notes, and designed to smell different based on the time after application. For example, some top note citrus scents smell stronger immediately upon application, while a lavender middle note may be sensed after some time from application as the top note evaporates.
